Gladiator training

The amphitheater of Capua coming in second in size only to the colliseum in Rome was first built by Augustus.  It was the leading gladiator school of the age.  In fact, Spartacus was trained here and later lead the slave revolt from this very spot.

We had a beautiful day to wander through and around this site.  It gives the distinct impression of a modern football field.  I suppose that is where the inspiration came for modern day arenas.

View from where we parked at the ruins that were part of the original arena leading to the current ruins.

What is now the entrance.

The underground portion showing the ditch where water was channeled through.

Jett, making like a lion ready to enter the ring.
