Making Nocino

Part of the beauty of living here in Italy is all of the new things you get to learn.  If you are not shy about asking questions most people will show you things that are part of the culture.  That is how I started to learn to make Nocino.

Our landlords had asked us if we would purchase some grain alcohol for them.  It seemed they were going to make something.  At the time we thought lemon cello as that is only liquor we knew of that was made with grain alcohol.  We had asked if they would show us how.

The next day I met my landlady's sister-in-law, Giussepina, down in the cellar of our building.  I knew by this time, thanks to our neighbor Giun Franco, that we would be making a liquor with nuts but otherwise I was still in the dark.

Upon arriving in the cellar Giussepina is standing at cutting board whacking the heck out of something with a mallet.  Closer inspection enlightened me only partially when I saw she was taking round green "fruit" from a wash and pulverizing them with the mallet.

I understood with my terrible command of Italian that you needed to do this to forty-eight of these unknown orbs and stuff the pieces into a jar then fill the jar with the alcohol.  From there she told me that it sits in the sun for some time and you give it a shake now and again.  Later after the fermentation time is up spices and water will be added.  Eventually the whole mess will be strained and bottled. After my time with Giussepina I asked if she would help me make one for us.  She gladly agreed.

Dave purchased another bottle of alcohol and my landlady, Andriana brought up the curious little green orbs that I knew now were immature walnuts call nocini.  The next thing I knew she and I were sitting on my kitchen floor pulverizing nocini and shoving them into a jar.  The jar is now on my back balcony fermenting until next process needs to happen.

I will keep you posted on what we do next!

Super Moon June 2013

Just a few pictures of the Super Moon from our back balcony.  I wish that pictures could really capture the beauty of it.

We sat out for several hours watching the moon rise and trying to get a good shot or two.  The best news was we got to see fireworks too so we had double the fun!

Amalfi Coast Mini Cruise

Last weekend we were able to go somewhere we have both been really looking forward to.  We went to the Amalfi Coast.  We did it in a way that I think is pretty unique, we took a little cruise.  Seeing the coast from the water was very fun and relaxing.  NO traffic, NO curvy dangerous roads!  Just the sun and the water and the best company I could ask for.

The cruise stops for swim time off the coast of Capri at the White Grotto.  Dave was brave and went in.  I wussed out as I knew the water was cold but the main reason was I was concerned about getting back up the ladder onto the boat with my bad leg.  Next time I won't let Dave have all the fun!

There are lots of cool sights on this cruise including a ruin of a castle said to have been a getaway for Queen Isabella to bathe in the magnificent Mediterranean waters.

After several hours on the water, and a swim stop we arrived in Positano.  The place defies description as well as gravity.  It is all that you imagine and a bit more.

Positano
The beach is not what most expect in a beach.  It is very rocky and quiet busy.  We didn't bother spending too much time by the water as we wanted to explore what we could of the town in our allotted 3 hours.

Positano from the beach

As you might expect you either walk up hill or downhill in Positano, there really is no in between.  The streets are mostly pedestrian only but there are some cars and scooters about.

There is also plenty of opportunity to shop for anything from cheap tourist crap to very expensive clothing, decor and jewelry.  We did pick up a couple of gifts here and the cutest cafe set you ever saw for ourselves.

Pretty wisteria covered path in Positano

We climbed nearly to the top of one side of town and found a restaurant with a fantastic view of Positano.  So we sipped wine and had melon and prosciutto and fish for our luncheon with a vantage point of the city and the ocean that was something out of a movie.

Our lunch view wasn't too bad

Mmmm fish for lunch

We will do this cruise again I think but probably take it to the other stop in its itinerary, Amalfi.  We had such a wonderful day and made a lot of memories that will last a lifetime.  Here is to living the Sweet Life!

Barkin BBQ - Naples Support Site

Had a fun evening at the USO's Barkin BBQ.  It was a great little event that we could enjoy with our furry kids.

We didn't arrive in time for the contest but I don't know that Jett or Jackson minded.  They just enjoyed the grass and seeing other dogs.

London June 2013

We have been planning this trip since October or November last year.  Dave had purchased tickets to see one of our favorite comedians, Eddie Izzard.  Probably the best part about this trip to London is that we really didn't do a lot of touristy things.  We simply enjoyed the city.

As with most of our trips the first thing to do after getting settled into our hotel (Lancaster)., which by the way was in a perfect location near Hyde Park, is to find sustenance.  First we thought we wanted to go to The Swan which is the only pub overlooking the park and is sort of historic but upon seeing the amount of tourists and rowdy young people we decided to look elsewhere.

I am so glad we looked on for a different place.  Just a block or so down and one up we found the Mitre (http://www.mitrelancastergate.com).  This very traditional looking pub sports lots of wood and cut glass windows a good selection of beer on tap and yummy food.  We kept our food selection English this evening.  I had a wonderful steak pie and Dave had fish and chips.  The perfect beginning to our London holiday.

Our first full day in London was spent exploring the Borough Market.  This market has been in existence since 1015 which makes it the oldest in London.  It is also incidentally the largest.  The market operates on Fridays and Saturdays and is a feast for the eyes and taste buds!

Although the market is crowded it is so much fun to see all the fresh food available.  Pretty much anything you could want to eat you can find at this market.  We were only sorry we were staying in a hotel this trip and not an apartment so we could take some things back and cook!

Cheese, fish, vegetables of all kinds can be found at the Borough Market.  Specialty items including spices, preserves, olive oils are also in abundance here.  Check out he bread in the photo below.  The loaves on the right in the bag in particular.  That is one loaf that is that large, nearly 3 feet long!  Amazing!

Truffles anyone?

Near the market is a wonderful cheese shop called Neal's Yard Dairy (http://www.nealsyarddairy.co.uk).  We purchased cheddar to take home.  I could have taken it all home, every one of the cheeses are fantastic!  Nothing better than dairy products from the UK!

After hauling our booty back to the hotel we ventured back out again.  Of course we had to take photos near the phone box.  You don't dare go in they are so filthy but it is still great to see they are being kept around even if they don't contain phones very often anymore they are a London tradition.

We spent a good deal of time meandering through Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens for the remainder of the day.  It was one of those uncommon sunny days in London and everyone was in the parks enjoying it.  It was beautiful!

We walked in the gardens for most of the afternoon.  We then decided to track down a wine bar we had found on our first trip to London five years ago.  So, we hopped on the tube and headed toward Shepherd's Bush.  When we got off at the tube station it was not how we remembered it and we wondered if we would be able to find our quarry.  Luckily we didn't give up and finally walked down far enough to find the Albertine Wine Bar.  Although they Shepherd's Bush area has gotten rather run down the wine bar is the same.  It is cozy and small with a wonderful selection of wines by the glass.  You can also get great selections of cheese and meats if you need to munch on something with your wine.

As we were getting ready to end our visit to this fun little place we mentioned that we were glad that we had found it all those years ago and that they were still there and the same.  It turns out our comment was heard by the proprietor's wife, Ann.  Before we knew it she joined us and even brought her husband down to chat until he went back to catch his Rugby match.  They generously bought us another glass of wine and we had a wonderful conversation.  It made our visit even more special and we are looking forward to our next trip to London so we can spend time in this gem of a bar.

We had not been hungry at the Albertine but by the time we got back to Lancaster Station we needed a bite to eat so we decided to go back to the Mitre for a beer and a burger to split before calling it a day.

The day of the concert we spent again wandering in the gardens.  It was just too nice to spend all our time cooped up in a museum.  We made sure we hunted down the Peter Pan statue which is really a beautiful piece with a lot of fun details to look for including little mice, and Wendy of course and rabbits and such.

We went to Kensington Palace but did not do the tour as it was 16 pounds a person.  Pretty price for a palace so we decided against it and just enjoyed the grounds.

That evening we spent at the O2 theater laughing at the irrepressible Mr. Izzard.  We had a great time!  This trip made me believe more and more that going to different cities is not just about how much tourist stuff you can see but the experience of the area and the people you get to meet.  Can't wait for our next adventure!
