Paestum - May 2013

We try to go and see something new every couple of weeks so we decided to drive the 2 and half hours to Pasteum with the dogs.

Paestum has some of the largest and best preserved Grecco Roman ruins in the area.   The city was founded at the end of the 7th century BC by Greeks and was originally called Poseidonia. It eventually became a Roman city with its current name in 273 BC.

The main reason this city remained so entact was it was surrounded by very swampy land and was loaded with malaria causing mosquitoes.  That would keep me away for sure!

The area of ruins is quite large and made for a very interesting couple of hours just wandering along the paths.  It is not too hard to imagine what it might have been like as it is laid out the way most modern towns are.

Hope you enjoy the pictures as much as we enjoyed our day.
